about

“So here we are, first release of 2016 and we’re welcoming another DJ/ producer from New Zealand to the FatKidOnFire family. That’s two for two with the last two FKOFd EPs - take what you will from that. While we’ve had January off to prepare for what we’ve got planned over the next year, FKOFd026 brings in the new year as four of the most exciting tunes we’ve signed in a while…

“Like label-brethren Akcept, Headland joins our imprint from the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, the one and only Christchurch. The city, with its 380,000+ residents, has produced more exciting electronic musicians over the last five years than nearly any other location we’re aware of. And, with just a single listen of Headland’s debut solo release, we know you’ll agree that Gene’s FKOFd EP marks him as yet another Christchurch producer to watch.

“If you’re wanting a retrospective-sounding release, FKOFd026 probably isn’t for you. As far as our EPs go, these four tunes are on the futuristic, forward-facing end of the spectrum - and for good reason. Headland opens the EP with ‘Break Off’, which you need to experience in front of a system (or SubPac for that matter) to really feel. Its break is a superb bit of engineering too. ‘VHS Weather’ is probably our favourite of the four tunes, with an undeniable groove. Watch for the second drop! Track three, ‘Trade-off’, is an emotive number that still manages to confound and delight with its laid-back atmospheres and swinging low end. The final inclusion, the might ‘Inflekshuhn’, swaggers through its drop with its looping percussive hits, synths and sampling. It’s not a track you can listen to once - the more it’s played the better it gets.

“Like many of the producers we’ve work with over the years, Headland is early in his career but comes with talent wildly beyond his years or standing in the community. With another release scheduled soon after ours, we know 2016 is going to be a good year for Headland and the New Zealand bassweight enthusiasts. You’ve been warned.”
