about

“Much like Nomine introducing us to Atma, we owe an external party thanks for our FKOFd015 release with Sixth Ape. Drew and the Spectrum crew first drew our attention to Fintan’s music with their coverage of the truly astounding Arctic Chills EP. Much like our debut free album with Cypriot/ Bulgarian producer Rat, Sixth Ape’s ‘Arctic Chills’ release blended bass-focussed productions with world music instruments.

“We initially got in touch with Fintan after hearing Red Rocks, a truly amazing piece of music, and kept in close contact during his travels around Asia throughout this year. We shared a love for world music, created from a bass music producer’s perspective. And much like Around the World in 80 Riddims, it was common ground we were keen to explore…The FKOFd015 EP opens with Abdominal Breathing, matching crisp percussion with brilliant sample world and a hauntingly beautiful Indian Flute (which Fintan played himself). Track two, Intrusive Thoughts, flows like a glacial river – gentle atmospherics with a powerful sub undercurrent. Inner Zulu, with its tribal drumwork, vocal sampling and tight synths, rolls along like a thunderstorm across the savannah. Scattered Mind, the final inclusion, is perhaps the ‘expected’ tune on the release – a true sound system roller that breathes empty space, sub and spacious elements.

“We’ve had a truly brilliant year with FKOFd – twelve months, twelve releases and some truly amazing support. Sixth Ape’s smashed the final release of 2014 and set an extremely high precedent for 2015…”
